Tiki Guardian

Date: 12/13/2009

Location: Kona Village Resort

Size: 8" x 16"

Medium: Oil on stretched canvas

Artist's Comments: Along the shoreline of Kona village stand two impressive tiki gods protecting the Resort from both the Northern and Western corners. Carved out of large tree trunks, homage is paid to these gods by draping flower leis across their shoulders. The Kona Village Bay consists of a black sand beach with sections where there is a reef entry and soft sand entry. The reef entry creates wonderful purple shadows as the rocks dip just below the surface and collect small waves headed for shore. They gently lap the shoreline creating a serenade for guests who are lucky to inhabit the few oceanfront bungalows.

Beach House Sunlight

Date: 11/15/2009

Location: Hualalai Resort

Size: 18" x 18"

Medium: Oil on stretched canvas

Artist's Comments: I had so much fun painting “Beach House Twilight” that I wanted to paint the same subject during the day to experience how color variations occur between night and day. The ponds reflected the sky and took on its color. The ocean was an intense blue. Beach umbrellas were open and ready to protect guests from the warm sunshine. This painting reminds me of relaxing at the Beach House, enjoying a little lunch and perhaps a Hualalai lemonade while gazing at the sea and visiting humpback whales. Life can't get much better than this!

Beach House Twilight

Date: 11/02/2009

Location: Hualalai Resort

Size: 18" x 18"

Medium: Oil on stretched canvas

Artist's Comments: As in many places, sunset brings a magical touch to Hualalai Resort. It's the vibrant colors of the sunset mixed with the twinkling of tiki torches surrounding the property and the soft sound of ocean lapping at the shoreline that all combine to create a tranquil close to another day in paradise. One evening upon leaving from the Monday Night reception at the Beach House, I turned around in to witness the magic of another evening. The reflection of the tiki torches over the fish ponds caught my attention immediately and I couldn't resist putting that feeling on canvas.

Room with a View

Date: 9/04/2009

Location: Hualalai Resort

Size: 2' x 3'

Medium: Oil on stretched canvas

Artist's Comments: Wonderful friends of mine asked me to paint them a piece that would remind them of the beautiful view overlooking the 5th fairway. They mentioned that it wasn't the golf course itself that they loved but, the palm trees, lake and ocean beyond that they were particularity fond of. As I meandered through the home, the view from the master bedroom caught my eye and the composition was perfect! There was a nice balance between all the elements with the palm trees taking prominence. By now, I was confident in my technique in painting a golf course and enjoyed layering on heavier paint in areas to create stronger highlights. I had a little difficulty in making the lake set down below the golf course but found that darkening the end of the lake provided the perspective I needed. I am happy with the sense of looking up into the trees as they reach into the sky; leaves gently rustling in the soft breeze. What a beautiful setting to wake up to each morning!

Hualalai 16th Fairway

Date: 8/20/2009

Location: Hualalai Resort

Size: 8" x 8"

Medium: Oil on stretched canvas

Artist's Comments: One of my collectors requested that I paint the 16th hole at Hualalai as this is the only hole he has not received a hole-in-one. I immediately thought of a wonderful sunny day with the golf course fairways shinning vibrantly and the grove of palm trees at the adjacent property swaying in the breeze. The hole itself would be the focus of piece drawing in intention and energy for a hole-in-one. However, the collector proceeded to tell me that his favorite color was yellow and immediately, my vision switched to a wonderful sunset setting with the sky bursting in shades of yellow and the fairways containing more shadows with strong highlights from the setting sun. I gained further inspiration from a new work by Darrell Hill where he painted the setting sun and I was intrigued at how "bright" the sun appeared due to the simple fact that the sky was painted a darker shade which allowed the sun to jump forward and appear radiant. So, I headed to the 16th hole over a series of evenings with camera in had to capture what I thought was the perfect combination of sky and earth. The application was done in my studio and I had so much fun painting the colors of the setting sun!
