Surf's Up!

Date: 1/9/2010

Location: Hapuna Beach Park

Size: 16" x 24"

Medium: Oil on stretched canvas

Artist's Comments: I could not think of a better way to spend my birthday than painting a wonderful ocean scene! We rented these little shelters at Hapuna Park the night before and through the entire evening, we could hear the loud crashing of waves from the shore. The surf was up indeed! The following morning we headed down to the beach and set up camp in one of the large pavilions which had a perfect view of the crashing waves and a perfect palm tree. We spent the entire day at the beach and I painted the view from our wonderful pavilion. The composition is quite simple but, I think the tree reaching through the entire canvas provides a vertical anchor to all the horizontal waves rolling to shore. It was really difficult to mimic the graduated colors of the shoreline; from the golden sandy beaches, to the dark purple-blue horizon and so many color combinations in between! It was also difficult to capture the essence of the waves as they were breaking so quickly. Good thing I had my trusty camera to allow me to finish the final details at home!

The Perfect Ending to a Perfect Day

Date: 1/15/2010

Location: Hualalali Resort

Size: 18" x 18"

Medium: Oil on stretched canvas

Artist's Comments: There are only a few things that can beat spending a day in paradise; one of them is to wrap up the day relaxing in one of the cherished beach chairs at the Beach House restaurant while watching the sun slip below the horizon. The sky blooms into color as the Resort's many tiki torches begin to twinkle in the evening darkness. I used my artistic license and intensified the sunset colors to create an intensity of purples and pinks which were the preferred sunset colors of the clients who commissioned my to paint this wonderful scene. The freshwater ponds delicately reflect the sky and tiki torches while sandwiching the painting in wonderful bands of color. I particularily like how the purple and pink tones are contrasted with the green grass and blue ocean hues.
