Artist's Comments: Kohala Coast Fine Art Galley is hosting an event celebrating the Color Red and, gallery owners Jerry and Lori requested any paintings featuring red tones. Personally, red is my least favorite color and I use it sparingly in mixture with other colors or, as a faint highlight. To devote an entire painting on red was almost unfathomable to me. What would I paint? What is red and at the beach? At first I thought of bikinis, tents, etc. as I was planning a camping trip to Kiholo the following weekend. Then in reviewing my digital library I realized I had the perfect photo – a wonderfully red sunset at Kiholo Bay ~ it would fit in perfectly with my weekend get-away! Now inspired, I packed my paints along with our other camping paraphernalia and began working on the piece the moment the camp site got set up. I found laying down the bright colors was fun but overwhelming at the same time. The painting ended up taking up a life of its own and I whipped out the pallet knife and started layering paint thick and heavy. Quite quickly I had to literally stop myself before I created a giant paint muck..... so, here it is “Kiholo Red Light” for display at “The Color Red” reception Friday April 30 at Kohala Coast Fine Art.
